Manual Therapy

What is Manual and Manipulative Therapy?
Manual therapy, also known as mobilization or manipulative therapy, is a form of hands-on treatment where a physiotherapist moves the joints and soft tissues of the body to restore movement and relieve pain.
Research studies indicate that this treatment is helpful in recovery from many musculoskeletal issues and injuries.
The goal of manual therapy is to treat the neuromusculoskeletal aspect of the patient’s condition. Applying this treatment addresses the condition directly; rather than just its symptoms. Manual therapy involves the assessment and treatment of the musculoskeletal system using specialized movements applied by a trained and regulated health professional.
When Can It Be Used?
Manual and manipulative therapy can be helpful throughout all regions of the body. For example, treatment of the neck with manual therapy can help alleviate headaches and jaw pain. This type of therapy is used in collaboration with other interventions to treat both acute/chronic neck pain, whiplash, and radiating nerve pain.
Benefits of Manual and Manipulative Therapy
In cases like chronic or acute shoulder pain, manual therapy can reduce discomfort. It also addresses problems within the fascia, mobilization of nerves, and soft-tissue injury. Following treatment, patients often report that the muscles feel loosened and relaxed, with a sensation of increased circulation. The aim is to allow movement to extend beyond the restricted range of motion the patient is experiencing.
